PRINCE GEORGE, Va. -- A Prince George man is asking why a police officer shot his dog in his own yard Sunday morning.

Prince George police claim the bullet grazed the dog's head, but the animal's owner insists the bullet created a hole in his dog.

"How would you like it if somebody came to your house and shot your dog," Miguel Cintron, the dog's owner, asked.

Cintron admits his four-year-old pit bull "Blue" was able to get off his leash. However, he argued that police should never have drawn their weapon since "Blue" was on his own property.

But neighbors and police told a different story. Police claim the dog nearly attacked the officer, who was called to the neighborhood after neighbors complained that the dog was on the loose.

"As soon as he got out of the car, the dog attacked him and the officer drew his weapon," one neighbor, who spoke with CBS 6 News on the condition of anonymity, said.

"The kids are here are scared of him its just not a nice dog at all," the neighbor said.

However, Cintron does not believe that accusation.

"The dog doesn't even know his way around this neighborhood," Cintron insisted. "He's never left this yard."

"I don't know what I did wrong and I feel like I let my family, myself, and my dog down," Cintron added.

"Blue" was taken to an emergency vet for his injuries. It is unclear if he will survive.
