RICHMOND, Va. -- High winds knocked out power to more than 35,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers Saturday night in Central Virginia, according to Dominion's website. The number of outages was down to around 20,000 by 8 a.m. , then dropped to just under 15,000 by 1 p.m. and had lowered to just under 5,000 by 10 p.m. Sunday.
Dominion posted on its Facebook page at 1 p.m. that "crews continue to work on the 35,000 customers who are still without power.
Officials said that Central Virginia was hit hardest by the storm. As a result, restoration times will not be posted until late Sunday afternoon.
"We expect all customers to be restored by the end of the day Monday, and the vast majority of you to be restored by the end of today," read a post on the Dominion Facebook page. "We know it’s cold and appreciate your patience as we get everyone restored."
Dominion said that restoration times differ based on where customers live in the power giant's service territory.
Richmond and Midlothian were the areas hit the hardest according to Daisy Pridgen, a Dominion spokesperson. Pridgen said Saturday night that Dominion has received reports of broken poles, downed wires and tangled wires.
"It's going to be a challenge for them," Pridgen said, referring to Dominion's repair crews. "They'll be working through the night."
Pridgen recommends customers report outages from their smartphones by going to Dom.com. You can also call 866-366-4357.
Statewide, close to 102,000 customers were powerless at one point.
