CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- As a new driver, high school student Nathaniel Miller is extra cautious out on the road, especially near his school.
"I definitely try to be careful," he said.
Unfortunately, despite the warning signs, not everyone pays attention.
"That's one of our priorities to try to reduce that," said Lt. Jay Thornton with the Chesterfield County Police Department.
Thornton said speeding near and in school zones happens almost daily.
In an effort to raise awareness and reduce speeders, the department is increasing traffic safety awareness in and around school zones, as well as areas where school buses will be.
"If you're near a school bus or around a school bus, give proper distance," said Thornton, "A lot of time it's hard for motorists to see the blind spots, especially when they are slowing down or stopping."
CBS 6 was near Manchester Middle School Friday morning where a police officer was there showing us how he and others catch speeders.
