SAINT BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- Virginia Commonwealth University fell short by two, 73-71, against St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon.
The 18th-ranked VCU played a close game until St. Bonaventure’s Marcus Posley led his team to victory with a running layup at the buzzer. This is Posley’s second time beating the buzzer this week.
“Credit to St. Bonaventure for playing a great game with a great atmosphere today. It's certainly tough when you lose two central figures on your team like Bri and Tre, but I'm proud of the way our guys battled right to the end," said VCU head coach Shaka Smart.
VCU was already at a loss playing without two of their lead seniors, Briante Weber and Treveon Graham.
Weber suffered a knee injury that will leave him out for the season and Graham sustained an ankle injury in Wednesday’s game against George Mason.
The Rams picked up in the second half. With less than a minute on the clock, guard Jordan Burgess scored a 3-pointer evening the score at 34.
The two battled when the Bonnies took a 10-point lead with less than 20 minutes remaining. VCU responded with a 7-0 run and a 3-point shot by JeQuan Lewis.
Jordan Burgess tied the game at 71 with less than two minutes left in the game, but it wasn’t enough. Posley stole the game, ending in a two-point victory for the Bonnies.
