HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Allegiant Air announced Wednesday it would begin flying non-stop from Richmond International Airport to St. Petersburg–Clearwater International Airport in Florida on February 13, 2015. The airline is selling $55 one-way tickets as part of a celebratory introductory fare.
“Allegiant will be the first airline to provide Richmond travelers with non-stop, low-cost service to Tampa Bay, one of our prime leisure destinations,” Jude Bricker, Allegiant Travel Company senior vice president of planning, said in a statement.
The airline alsolaunched a contest in which the winner would get two free tickets from Richmond to Tampa each month next year.
Allegiant plans to offer two flights a week from Richmond.
“Thanks to Allegiant, convenient access from Richmond to the Tampa Bay area becomes a reality in February,” Jon E. Mathiasen, Capital Region Airport Commission AAE, president and CEO, said in a statement. “Up to this point, the Tampa Bay area has been one of our most demanded destinations without non-stop flights.”
