HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Police blocked off the area around North Elm Avenue and West Washington Street in Highland Springs after a Sunday morning shooting. Neighbors said it appeared a man shot and killed himself after he was surrounded by Henrico Police officers. Henrico Police have not yet released information about the incident.

Kristin Patterson was sitting on her front porch at about 7:40 a.m. when she saw several police cars drive by her house. She said the officers got out of their cars and started to scream “get down” and “drop the weapon” to someone out of her line of sight.

“The yelled it about 20 times,” Patterson said. “I could hear a neighbor say ‘please just get down for them.'”

Patterson said she saw police in position with shields and large guns. She said they ordered her to get back into her home.

Patterson said what happened next was unclear, but it appeared that the person police surrounded turned the gun on himself.

“It’s scary. We have little ones. What if they were out there playing,” she said.”It’s not something you think is going to happen where you live.”

Police remained on scene to gather evidence.
