School closes early, hundreds lose power in city outage

RICHMOND, Va. — A dump truck working on school property struck a power line and knocked out power to Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School and parts of the surrounding community.  The outage knocked out power to more than 1,500 customers in the area of 7th and Hospital Streets.

Dominion Virginia Power estimated power would be restored between 10 a.m. and noon.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School dismissed at 9:15 a.m., according to the school system.

“Normal operations” at Bellevue Elementary School were expected to resume by 10 a.m., Richmond Public Schools tweeted.

No one was injured in the incident. No charges were expected to be filed.
