SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Virginia State Police are investigating a Sunday afternoon shooting that killed a teenager. Tyler Givens, 15, suffered a fatal gunshot wound at a home in the 26000 block of Jefferson Road in Jarratt. The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m.
"Givens’ body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for autopsy and examination," Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller wrote in an updated emailed Monday morning. "No charges or arrests have been made at this stage of the ongoing investigation."
Police have not yet said whether the shooting was accidental or if Tyler fired the gun himself. Police did confirm a handgun was recovered as part of the investigation.
Givens' family and friends are heartbroken over the loss.
“I grew up with him man we have been brothers ever since then and for me to wake up and tell me that me he's died that actually hurt me,” one of Tyler's friends CBS 6 News' Joe St. George. "He didn't really bother people much. I just can't believe that he gone.”
