HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - A 78-year-old man was killed and his 78-year-old wife was injured in a morning tractor accident at their home, according to Hanover County Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Mike Trice.
Trice said the man was operating the tractor when he fell and was injured. The woman was hurt trying to help her husband, Trice said.
Earlier, Trice said it appeared the couple was hooking equipment up to their tractor when the vehicle ran them over. However Trice updated that information
to say the tractor equipment was already hooked up at the time of the accident.
The woman's condition has not yet been released. She is undergoing treatment at VCU Medical Center, Trice said.
The accident happened at the couple's home on Verdon Rd., just north of Ashland.
Neighbors are saddened by the devastation that happened outside their homes Thursday morning.
"I'm actually very saddened. They're good people. Always would help us, you know, If we needed help,” said Candy Foreback.
Patrick Locklear heard about a tragic accident and ran feverishly down the road to help his friend.
"I seen them doing CPR and stuff and I tried to get up there to him,” said Locklear. “And they wouldn't let me."
They always came up here and work. We always garden together. It's going to be tough this year. He's going to be really missed,” said Locklear.
The Hanover County Sheriff’s office isn’t saying if the homeowner was fatally injured by the fall or from the moving the tractor equipment. They say that’s part of the investigation. And the names of the victims are not being released.
