RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Rutgers University fired men’s basketball coach Mike Rice Wednesday, one day after ESPN broadcast video of Rice physically and verbally abusing players.

The video, which ESPN said features excerpts of practice sessions shot between 2010 and 2012, earned Rice a three-game suspension and a $50,000 fine in November. Administrators at New Jersey’s flagship university were under pressure from incensed state officials to dismiss the fiery coach, the network said.

Dr. Brendan Dwyer, with the Center for Sport Leadership at VCU, appeared on the CBS 6 News at 5 to discuss the video and Rice’s firing.

“I think there is going to be people out there that may say this is just the way coaching is and that’s unacceptable,” Dwyer said. “What’s been done in the past and what’s acceptable in the past doesn’t mean it’s appropriate.”
