CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) -- Chesterfield police confirmed Sunday that the 6-week-old baby, allegedly shaken by his father earlier this month, has died in the hospital.

Sgt. Mitch Dawson with the Chesterfield Police Department said Jayden Simmons died from his injuries at VCU Medical Center.

Jayden's father, Bradley Simmons, is charged with felony child abuse in connection to an incident that occurred on March 13 at the family's home in Chester.

Bradley Simmons is currently being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail.

Sgt. Dawson tells CBS 6 that any new charges will not be filed until Monday at the earliest because investigators need to consult with the Commonwealth Attorney's office first.

CBS 6 legal analyst Todd Stone said Simmons could now face new charges of either manslaughter or second degree murder on top of the felony child abuse charge.

Stone says manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and second degree murder 40 years in prison.
