RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The recent success of the VCU Rams men’s basketball team has increased the program’s exposure. The Rams’ Final Four run in 2011 has resulted in a lengthy consecutive sellout streak at the Siegel Center, more nationally televised basketball games and elevated head coach Shaka Smart to “rock star” status in basketball circles.
So it may come as no surprise that when Academy Award nominated filmmaker Spike Lee visited VCU for a speaking engagement Thursday, he requested to meet Shaka Smart and the team.
While we’re not sure what Lee and Smart talked about, we did get this picture of a smiling Smart posing with Lee.
Perhaps Lee, a vocal fan of the New York Knicks, tried to recruit Coach Smart to the big city. You can see Lee wore Knicks’ orange and blue while speaking to VCU students in the land of black and gold.
Do the right thing Coach Smart… stay in Richmond!
