RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Richmond will be host to the city’s first-ever “Slut Walk” to raise awareness about sexual assaults on Saturday.
“Abolish the Blame” will start at 11:30 a.m. at Monroe Park in Richmond.
In 2011, women in Toronto held the first “Slut Walk” after the police there made insensitive comments about the victims of sexual assaults.
Women there dressed up like they are spending a night on out, and then walked together through the city to bring awareness to the need for more education on sexual abuse. “Slut Walks” then sprang up throughout the world.
Helen Rogers, a local woman who says she’s been raped twice, organized the event here to help fellow victims heal and promote awareness about sexual assault.
Rogers says it has taken her years to heal emotionally from her attacks, but hopes this event will show others that healing does happen.
