SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Two mothers are in jail held without bond after a naked child was discovered wandering outside a WaWa convenience store.
In an email to CBS 6, Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Captain Mike Harvey said a store employee found the child Sunday outside the WaWa at 10704 Courthouse Road.
The worker clothed the child and called the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office. The child directed a deputy back to her Courthouse Road home where the deputy said she immediately smelled rotten food and animal waste. Once inside the home the deputy found that bad food and waste.
She also found seven other children who ranged in age from seven months to 16-years-old, Captain Harvey said.
The children’s mothers, Crystal Dawn Craig, 29, and Amy Elizabeth Lam, 38, were also in the home. Deputies charged Craig, the mother of three children, with three counts of felony child neglect. Lam, the mother of five children, is charged with five counts of felony child neglect.
All eight children were taken into protective custody and then turned over to their grandmothers, Harvey said.
The Sheriff’s Office Animal Control division also removed seven dogs and two kittens from the home. Lam is charged with failure to maintain her premises in a sanitary condition and duties of an owner to provide food and water.
The children were unharmed, Capt. Harvery said.
