WASHINGTON (CNN) - The House Oversight Committee filed a civil contempt lawsuit against Attorney General Eric Holder Monday, demanding he hand over all records related to the botched gun-tracking operation known as "Fast and Furious".
The committee wants Holder to release documents linked to the controversial weapons crackdown and has asked a federal court to reject a claim by President Obama that asserts executive privilege.
Republicans accuse Holder of stonewalling the investigation by not releasing the documents. Democrats say the citation was motivated by politics, and the Justice Department says it won't bring criminal charges against its boss.
The "Fast and Furious" program was meant to track weapons purchases by Mexican Drug Cartels. Instead, the program lost track of more than 1,000 firearms.
