ASHLAND, Va. (WTVR) – A slow-moving Amtrak train struck a car that drove across the railroad tracks Tuesday afternoon in Ashland, according to Ashland Police Lt. Jim Shelhorse.

The train was moving 15 miles per hour, Shelhorse said.

Shelhorse said the 78-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He said the driver drove around the railroad track’s crossing arms because she thought the arms were down due to construction in the area.

The woman’s car was damaged on impact, the train was not.

The crossing at Myrtle Street and Railroad Avenue reopened shortly after the accident, Shelhorse said.

CSX is doing repair work along the tracks at England Street this week.
