A VSU spokesman said Hughes was neither a VSU student nor employee.

Police said Hughes died at the hospital after the person driving him to Southside Regional Medical Center crashed. Police indicated Hughes, of the 200 block of St. Matthew Street in Petersburg, died as a result of the shooting and not injuries sustained in the crash.

A second person, confirmed to be a VSU student, was injured in the shooting. That student was treated and released from the hospital.

The shooting happened in the street between campus dorm buildings and the Virginia State University Federal Credit Union. The bank was not involved in the confrontation that happened in the street, a police investigator said.

Police ask anyone with information about this crime to call Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.
