Petersburg got 30 points from Frank Mason as the Crimson Wave moved toward another state title game appearance by knocking off Thomas Edison high from Alexandria 69-61 on Friday night in the VHSL Group AAA state quarterfinals.
Mason added 15 rebounds and teammate Marcus Hoosier poured in 19 points as the Wave improved to 28-1. They will next play in the semifinals on Wednesday at 3:45 at the Siegel Center.
The Henrico Warriors overcame another poor night at the foul line to knock off Westfield 56-52. Their next game will also be at the Siegel Center on Wednesday at 8:45.
The Highland Springs girls used just six players...and four starters played the entire game but they beat West Springfield 53-46.
De'June' Robinson had 13 points, Kermisha Clark added 11 and Jazzmin Dabney and Brianna Justice added 10 apiece for the Lady Springers who improve to 29-1. They will play Oakton in the state semifinals next Wedneday at 2pm. Oakton beat Central Region runner-up Monacan 73-65.
St Catherine's was upset in their VIS Division One semifinal by Liberty-Christian 53-50. Meredith Doswell had 22 points and 15 rebounds and her twin sister Ali had 15 more. The Saints end the most successful season in school history with a record of 21-3.
