RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) – Despite having one of the most historic runs in NCAA tournament history, the VCU Men’s Basketball team was not chosen for the 2011 Sports Illustrated “Sportsman of the Year” award.

Sports Illustrated instead chose Duke University Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzweski and University of Tennessee Women’s Basketball Coach Pat Summit for the honor. [Read about the winners here]

The Rams were nominated for the award by Sports Illustrated senior writer and CBS college basketball analyst Seth Davis.

Davis said the team’s historic run to the 2011 Final Four in Houston, Texas is the reason the Rams deserve the honor.

“America loves an underdog, and for three weeks in March, the nation was smitten with Shaka Smart and his VCU Rams,” wrote Davis in the Sports Illustrated column in which he announced his nomination.
