RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) – The University of Richmond named Liberty football coach Danny Rocco as the Spiders new head football coach this afternoon. Last week, the Spiders announced they would make their initial announcement about any hiring on the athletic department’s Facebook page.

WSET in Lynchburg is reporting that Rocco held a meeting with his team at Liberty at 3pm today to tell them the news he would be moving on. He has been head coach of the Flames since December of 2005. During that time, his teams have won 4 Big South conference titles and he has been honored as Big South coach of the year 3 times. His overall record at Liberty in 6 years is 47-20.

Rocco’s coaching career has taken him to Wake Forest, Colorado, Tulsa, Boston College, Texas, Maryland and Virginia before he came to Liberty. At UVA, he was an associate head coach under Al Groh, with whom he also coached the New York Jets for one season.
Rocco is replacing Wayne Lineburg who was the interim head coach this past season, going 3-8 after taking over for Latrell Scott who resigned less than two weeks before the 2011 season started. When Rocco is formally introduced by Richmond, he will be their 5th different head football coach in the last 6 seasons.

Richmond will hold a formal press conference on campus Wednesday afternoon at 1pm
