PETERSBURG, Va. -- Volunteers across the region spent Christmas making sure everyone had an opportunity to have a hot meal.

In Petersburg, members of the Little Creek Kung Fu Training Center handed out masks, gloves, and clothes that were donated from the community.

They also handed out more than 200 meals to those in need.

In addition, cousins Jessica Chapman and Lachelle Jones carried on their grandmother's tradition of service.

"We just wanted to make sure that we had everything that they needed in one space," Chapman said. "Just come out and be loved on, be with good people. We don't have as many food stamps available. So now we have people coming for food at a much higher rate. Normally there are 20 to 30 people here for a meal on Sundays and there was almost 90 this past weekend."

Volunteers said no meal would go to waste and they planned to deliver food to community members who were unable to attend.
