RICHMOND, Va. — Wawa has teamed up with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery to create a specialty barrel-aged beer called Coffee Cake Reserve Stout.

The 6% ABV canned beer will be available at Wawa locations around Central Virginia.

“Best known for spiced stouts including the ever-popular Gingerbread Stout, Hardywood’s breakfast beer combines Wawa’s Winter Reserve Coffee with an oatmeal stout with vanilla bean, cinnamon spice, brown sugar and coconut to create a flavor of freshly dipped coffee cake,” Wawa posted online about the collaboration.

“We are excited to be working with 2SP and Wawa on this project. We really respect 2SP for the high quality brews they make and Wawa is an important retail partner of ours who has a very high level of standards in all areas of what they do. The beer we are making is a Coffee Cake Stout called Coffee Cake Reserve Stout, made with Wawa’s Winter Reserve Coffee,” Hardywood Park Craft Brewery Master Brewer and Co-founder Patrick Murtaugh said. “Wawa is known for serving outstanding coffee and so incorporating their coffee into the beer concept just made sense. We had the opportunity to go out to Wawa headquarters in PA where Michael McLaughlin, their Product Development Manager, led us in a proper cupping and taught us a bit about their bean selection process and roasting techniques. He is a true coffee geek if their ever was one… I don’t think he’d mind me saying that. It’s always inspiring when the people you are partnering with are just as geeky about their area of expertise as we are about beer. That was certainly the case here.”

In addition to Hardywood, Wawa worked with Coppertail Brewing Company in Tampa and 2SP Brewing Company in Pennsylvania.

Wawa and 2SP made a Winter Reserve Coffee Stout last year.

“At Wawa, supporting our local neighbors is at the heart of everything we do,” Mike Sherlock, Wawa Chief Product Marketing Officer, said. “We couldn’t have asked for better partners in working with 2SP, Hardywood and Coppertail, as they have all brought their unique talents to the table and we all can’t wait for our communities to experience these recipes.”

Hardywood will do an official beer release at the Wawa on Arthur Ashe Boulevard on Friday, Dec 13.
