Teen injured after altercation leads to Hopewell shooting

RICHMOND, Va. -- A Hopewell teen is recovering after being shot in the arm Monday afternoon.

Police say officers responded to the area of Weston Circle and West Cawson Street after reported shots fired in the area at approximately 3:40 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were notified a teen male showed up to the emergency room of John Randolph Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the right arm. The injury is considered non-life threatening.

After responding to the hospital, members of the Hopewell Police Department Criminal Investigation (CIU) initiated an investigation.

Police say the 17-year-old male victim was in the area of Weston Circle and West Cawson Street when he encountered the suspect.

"An altercation ensued at which time, offender described as a black male, light skin wearing a dark colored hooded shirt and caring a black backpack shot the victim," said a police spokesperson.

Police say a friend transported the teen victim to John Randolph Medical Center.

Police have not released specifics regarding a motive in the shooting as detectives continue to actively investigate the incident.
