KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. -- A Central High School student was arrested for bringing a gun to school, King & Queen County Public Schools Superintendent Carol Carter wrote in an email to parents on Monday.

“A threat was averted today without incident," her email read. "A student who had recently transferred to Central High School was reported by other students to be bragging about having a gun. Based on those reports, the School Resource Officer searched the student, and took possession of a handgun. The student was arrested and taken into custody. "

Carter cited student privacy laws as the reason why she could not release additional information.

"We are grateful for the wisdom and prompt action of our students, and the courage and professionalism of our School Resource Officer," she said. "Together, they kept our student body and staff safe, and neutralized a serious threat without undue disruption."

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips here.
