RICHMOND, Va. — Third Street Bethel AME Church marked the 20th year of its New Shoes for Back to School initiative Saturday, distributing more than 1,200 pairs of free shoes to students in need.
The event brought together 10 congregations — including churches and a synagogue from across the region — each donating at least 125 pairs of shoes.
More than two-thirds of the shoes were distributed at Saturday's event. The remaining pairs will be donated to Title I schools in the area.
