RICHMOND, Va. β The Autism Society of Central Virginia brought a beloved Richmond tradition to a new home Saturday, hosting RVA Duck Fest at CarMax Park while Brown's Island undergoes renovations.
More than 8,000 attendees were expected at the free, family-friendly event, which ran from 2 to 6 p.m.
With no river available for the traditional duck race, organizers introduced the Chuck-a-Duck Contest, inviting guests to toss souvenir rubber ducks toward targets for a chance to win prizes.
A special Golden Egg grand prize was awarded during each round, with contests held at 3, 4 and 5 p.m.
The festival also featured more than 50 community organization booths, live music and entertainment, a festival-wide scavenger hunt called Duck Quest, and appearances by Waddles, the event's official mascot.
A standout feature of the event was the Silent Duck Disco, where guests danced to music through wireless headphones β one of several sensory-friendly supports designed to make the festival accessible to autistic individuals and their families.
A dedicated Sensory Tent, Quiet Room, Cooling Zone, and indoor air-conditioned spaces were also available.
Ann Flippin, executive director of the Autism Society of Central Virginia, said the event is about creating a welcoming space for every family.
"Whether you're joining us to enjoy the festival, connect with local resources, participate in the Lucky Duck Raffle, or simply spend time together, we want everyone to experience the joy of belonging," Flippin said.
The Lucky Duck Raffle offered a $10,000 grand prize. Proceeds support the Autism Society of Central Virginia's year-round programs, services, advocacy, and education across Central Virginia.
