RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond High School for the Arts is ready to welcome students into its brand new building, though a planned ribbon-cutting ceremony was postponed due to storm concerns.
A media tour offered a first look inside the facility before the school year begins. No new date has been announced for the ribbon-cutting or public tours.
Tyron Bryant, an 11th grader at the school, said the new building left an immediate impression when he walked in for the first time.
"It was breathtaking. Yeah, that's a good word."
Bryant said the new space is a significant upgrade from his previous school and pointed to several features he is most looking forward to using.
"The elevators, the bigger gym and the cafeteria."
He said the new environment has him more motivated to show up and learn.
Bryant said he also believes the new building will open academic doors that were not available before.
He said the school has him feeling optimistic about what comes next.
"I feel like this school could probably help, I can get better knowledge, better education."
Bryant said the overall experience of stepping inside for the first time was hard to put into words — but one detail stood out.
"It smelled good for once..."
