RICHMOND, Va. -- Authorities have identified the young man killed on Richmond's East End early Thursday morning thanks to tips from the public.
Police said officers were in the area where the shooting happened, which was near the 1100 block of North 21st Street where it intersects with R Street, when they heard several shots.
"As they responded, the Richmond Department of Emergency Communications received calls for a person shot," police officials said.
Officers discovered the male victim, later identified as a 15-year-old, lying in the street suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim was taken to an area hospital where he died of his injuries, police said.
Police said Sunday that the teen's family asked that his name not be released.
"Detectives want to thank the public for their assistance in identifying this victim," police said.
