HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- State police are investigating a fiery crash on I-295 early Sunday morning that killed the driver of a pickup truck.

Troopers were called to the single-vehicle crash with a confirmed fatality along southbound I-295 near the Varina-Enon Bridge just before 1:40 a.m.

"[A pickup] was traveling southbound in the left lane when the driver ran off road left striking cones set up for an advance warning area for a work zone," a state police spokesperson said. "The driver then struck the jersey wall and an unoccupied... crash cushion truck that was sitting stationary with its lights activated. The [pickup] then came to rest on the jersey wall and catching on fire. "

The driver, who was the only person in the truck, died of their injuries at the scene.

"The deceased remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for examination, autopsy and positive identification," officials said.

Officials said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
