COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- An investigation is underway in Colonial Heights after a person who fired shots at police was later found dead behind a home.
Police were called to the 100 Block of Clearfield Circle at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday when someone reported a person trying to break into cars.
"Officers were canvasing the area, when an individual got into [a car] and attempted to leave the area," a Colonial Heights Police spokesperson said.
When officers stopped the car on Dunlop Farms Boulevard, the driver got out and fired gunshots at police.

"A Colonial Heights Officer on scene returned fire," the police spokesperson continued. " The suspect [ran] towards Greenmeadow Court. A short time later, a Prince George County K-9 unit located the suspect deceased behind a residence in the 300 Block of Greenmeadow Court."
Virginia State Police were called to takeover the investigation.
The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
