NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. -- Democratic ballots in Northumberland County were unavailable when voters arrived at the polls on Tuesday morning due to a printing error.
"Due to a printing error, some of the pre-printed ballots for Northumberland County were not available when polls opened today," said Steven Sockwell, Vice President of Marketing at Hart InterCivic. "As soon as we were notified of the issue, we worked with the County’s election officials to ensure no voter was turned away."
Because paper ballots were not available for Democrat voters, marking devices in each polling location were properly programmed with all ballot styles so voters could mark ballots, verify their choices marked on the paper ballot and scan it just like all other hand-marked ballots, according to Sockwell.
Hart also provided a corrected file to the County so that new paper ballots could be printed locally and delivered to all five polling places as quickly as possible this morning. The problem was corrected by 9 a.m.
"We have stayed in close touch with our customer throughout the day to ensure these solutions worked properly and we understand the election is operating normally with no significant delays," Sockwell said, while confirming that the issue was limited to Northumberland County only.
"We are working internally and with our customers to ensure this does not happen again."
