EMPORIA, Va. β A large fire broke out at the closed Georgia-Pacific plywood plant in Emporia Thursday evening, according to the Greensville Volunteer Fire Department.
The plant, located at 634 Davis Street, abruptly ceased operations in May 2025.
High winds during the fire carried embers into woods areas around the plant and even across Highway 58, according to the Greensville Volunteer Fire Department.
Mutual aid units were requested from Jarratt, Lawrenceville, Sussex Courthouse, Dolphin, Drewryville, Capron, Courtland, Boykins, and Colonial Heights.
Firefighters were able to knock down most of the fire in a few hours. Units will remain on scene into Friday morning to ensure the fire does not spread outside the shuttered facility.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was first reported at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
