RICHMOND, Va. -- Family and friends celebrated a Richmond couple’s milestone anniversary with a drive-by parade Saturday afternoon.
Frank and Charlotte Strayhorn were wed 65 years ago on Sept. 5, 1955.
"It's just unbelievable because I don't feel like I'm 65 years old yet," Mrs. Strayhorn laughed. "It's been so long."
The couple set they first met when they were 16 and dated for about five years before they tied the knot.
"She wasn't hard to see either. She was something to look at," Mr. Strayhorn.
But Mr. Strayhorn said they key to their relationship was realizing it was a "learning process."
"Somebody has to be smart enough to realize: be quiet and listen," Mr. Strayhorn explained. "And not only listen, but hear what is being said."
Mrs. Strayhorn said patience and understanding are also important to ensure it is "not so easy to give up."
