RICHMOND, Va. -- Although National Hispanic Heritage Month has come to a close, Diversity Richmond hosted an event Saturday to continue helping the Hispanic community and others.

The organization hosted their 2nd contact-free food drive helping more than 750 families. Drivers were able to pull up, open their trunks and have volunteers put in their groceries.

Support for the event has grown tremendously since the first food drive.

"It just feels so good to give back to the community because I once was in the other end. So being able to do this through Diversity, it's been so amazing," said Raul Cantu, a member of the Diversity Richmond Staff and coordinator of the food drive. "Every time we do an event, even though this is our second one, our volunteers doubled. Our donations have doubled as far as food and now the events are even over and I'm already asking, being asked from volunteers, 'When is the next one?'"

Donations were made by Richmond Diversity supporters as well as various national and local organizations.

Feed More donated:

  • 8,000 pounds of fresh produce
  • 1500 pounds of frozen chicken
  • 250 hams
  • 300 packaged meals
  • 200 students backpacks filed with snacks

In addition, Diaz Foods donated culturally appropriate items such as rice, black beans, tortillas, eggs, and tomato sauces. A local non profit, Silvas, also donated women's hygienic products while Jack Daniels Tennessee contributed canvas bags for food packaging.
