PETERSBURG, Va. -- The mother of 17-year-old Tayona "TayTay" Smith would like to know who killed her daughter.

A driver struck the Petersburg teen on March 5 as Smith and family members were pulled over on the side of a Raleigh, North Carolina road changing a tire.

The driver did not stop after hitting the high school senior.

"I know they say God don't make no mistakes, but that's my baby!" Smith's mother Lakeisha Rives said. "Come forward, whoever you may be. Come forward because we need closure."

Smith's family has offered a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the hit-and-run driver's arrest and conviction.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol was looking for a 2007 - 2013 black Toyota Tundra in connection to this case, WRAL reported.

Tayona, who is from Petersburg but attended school in North Carolina, would have graduated high school on June 5. Instead, her mother will walk across the stage to get receive the diploma.

Anyone with information can call North Carolina State Highway Patrol 919-733-2126.
