RICHMOND, Va. -- The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) said Tuesday they have only received two reports of COVID-19 vaccines being wasted for a total of 100 doses.

But, up until Friday, the state did not have a tool for providers to report wasted shots.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told providers they would be required to report the number of doses of COVID-19 vaccines that were unused, spoiled, expired, or wasted as part of its vaccination program provider agreement.

But, according to the VDH, the CDC, which is part of the federal government, told states it would be collecting data on wastage and would release guidance on how to report it.

However, a VDH spokesperson said Virginia was still awaiting that federal guidance.

So on Friday, VDH went ahead and set up a survey online for providers to report wastage.

From there, the information will be sent to the CDC.

At this point, VDH does not have any data to report from the new survey.
