SHORT PUMP, Va. – Sunday night’s rainfall was the perfect complement to a celebration called Our Laughter in the Rain, an event celebrating the beauty and strength of women and children who are battling cancer.

More than 500 people filled the ballroom at the Short Pump Hilton, along with several cancer linked hospitals and organizations, including Massey Cancer Center, Bon Secours, HCA and the American Cancer Society. Several nonprofits, including Cancer Link, Pink Chair and Lend Them a Helping Hand also took part.

The event, in its 7th year, offers connections, encouragement and hope for cancer survivors and cancer patients living in the Richmond and Tri-cities area. The night included guest speakers, musical performances and two fashion shows featuring adult and children models hitting the runway in Lilly Pulitzer and beautiful designs from Dillard’s and Chico’s.

“We are all living in uncertain financial times, gas is at an all-time high, interest rates are continuing to climb but that does not stop cancer,” says event organizer Cheryl Tankersly. “These warriors have experienced disappointment and seclusion due to having cancer and especially with the danger of getting Covid. They have little to no physical connection with other warriors and they desperately need this night!”

Several who took part in the celebration said they want others to know that there is strength in numbers and that a positive attitude is the best medicine.

“My biggest piece of advice is to let yourself feel it. But don't let yourself drown in it," Caroline Dunn said. "It’s good to feel the pain of it and it's good to think into it. But don't think into it so long that you can't think about anything else. Make sure that you're feeling what you need to feel, but also doing the things to help yourself climb out of the rut you're in."

WTVR CBS 6’s Tracy Sears, Reba Hollingsworth and Greg McQuade served as emcees.

“This is one of our favorite celebrations because we always feel inspired by these brave survivors and warriors,” Sears said.
