RICHMOND, Va. — Last month was third driest March on record, and April rainfall thus far has been pretty meager. Through April 21, the Richmond rainfall total was just shy of one inch. The total since March 1 is around two inches, and we are now more than four inches below normal.

The month’s rainfall has occurred on nine days, and only one day registered an amount above a quarter-inch.

Some showers and thunderstorms on Friday should help some, but it will not be enough to wipe out the majority of the deficit. Each week, the National Weather Service issues a drought monitor, and a lot of Virginia is very dry. Should we not get significant rainfall in the coming weeks, we may get upgraded into a drought category.
