CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- In support of National Work Zone Awareness Week, I met with a group of VDOT workers who showed me what it takes to do a good job on the roads.
Safety comes first with this job, so they had me wear a hard hat, safety vest and steel-toed boots. The vest was key in making sure drivers knew to slow down around the work zone.
Our work zone was a paving project on Woodpecker Road in Chesterfield. It was a little intimidating with so many vehicles around us. VDOT closed some lanes and flaggers directed traffic around the paving project.
I had several tasks like driving a tack truck, raking asphalt and operating the paver (or a roller). That was the best part of the job!
When driving in a work zone, it is import to:
- Slow down
- Not tailgate
- Avoid distractions likes text messaging and talking on the phone
