AUSTIN — Guns will be allowed in classrooms at the University of Texas at Austin next school year.

University president Gregory Fenves approved guidelines that complied with state law that allowed concealed handgun license holders to bring weapons into classrooms.

In a statement, he said he did not believe handguns belonged on campus and called the decision “the greatest challenge” of his presidency to date.
