Henrico neighbors warned after rabid raccoon attacks pet dog

Posted

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A raccoon that attacked a dog in Henrico’s West End has tested positive for rabies, Henrico Police spokesman Lt. Chris Eley confirmed. The attack happened Thursday evening on Everville Drive, near Hungary Road and West End Drive.

“The homeowner reported that their dog had been involved in an altercation with a raccoon and the raccoon was deceased. The raccoon’s remains were submitted to the Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services for rabies testing and positive test results were received,” Eley said. “There were no additional exposures to animals or humans reported.”

This is Henrico’s sixth confirmed positive rabies case this year, Eley said. The dog will receive a booster shot and remain under quarantine at home.

“Henrico Police Animal Protection reminds everyone to be sure to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current to ensure the safety of their pets and our community,” Eley said. “Please report abnormal wildlife behavior to the Henrico Police Non-Emergency Communications Center at (804) 501-5000.”
