Washington D.C. — On Father’s Day weekend, Washington’s first cat cafe, called Crumbs & Whiskers, is slated to open in Georgetown. The enterprise was initially funded by a Kickstarter campaign.
The owner Kanchan Singh told WTOP that she plans to have about two dozen felines on location at a time. The Washington Humane Society will help select and vaccinate the cats that will be hosted on site.
Cat cafes are popular in Asian countries. They are places, as Singh said in her Kickstarter pitch, that serve humans and cats. People who can’t own cats have the opportunity to bound with one. And the cats have an improved chance at finding a forever home when they are in such an environment, versus in a cage.
The Crumbs & Whiskers crowd-funding campaign had an original $15,000 goal, but more than 700 backers help raise almost $36,000.

Crumbs & Whiskers will be located at 3211 O St. NW.
