CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Cape Coral woman made an unusual discovery inside a drain at the front of her property: A huge, 12-foot-long alligator.

Even though it was dead, the discovery still prompted the shocked resident to run back to her house.

“I said, ‘Oh my god it’s an alligator,’ and took off running to the house,” said Mary Oliver. “We thought it would be like 3 or 4 feet but no, it was humongous.”

Oliver told WBBH that she discovered the animal on Friday night after flies began invading the front of her property.

Later on Monday, the Cape Coral Public Works Department hoisted the large gator with a crane out of the drain near Santa Barbara Boulevard and SW 31st Street.

Oliver lives beside a canal and says this is her first encounter with an alligator.

The city told Oliver it plans on fixing a grate they removed to pull out the massive reptile.

It is unclear how the gator died.
