CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A vigil will be held Friday to remember the Petersburg high school student killed in a hit-and-run crash in Chesterfield County.
Police are still looking for the driver who ran down Steffon Swilley Jr. Tuesday night while he was searching a Chester neighborhood for his baby brother.
The 16-year old, whose father found him lying in the road, later died from his injuries.
Friday's vigil will take place at the scene of the crash on Greyshire Drive around 6 p.m.
Police have asked the public to be on the lookout any cars with front-end damage.
Remembering Steffon Swilley Jr.
Steffond Swilley Sr. will always remember his son as a bright boy who loved his family, friends and his church. A teenager that he says had the world and a bright future ahead of him.
Swilley could have never prepared for what he saw Tuesday night when he ran into a police crime scene around the corner from his home. His son Steffond Jr. had gone out at his dad’s request to locate his brother who was somewhere in the neighborhood.
“Low and behold I went out there and I saw all of the police cars. Then I saw my son down on the ground. That’s something that I think no mother or father would like to see,” Swilley said.
Swilley Sr. said that he believes whoever hit his son is aware of what they did.
“He was just sixteen years old and he didn’t deserve to die like this” Swilley Sr. said.
Swilley Sr. said the father tells us that his son attended Petersburg High School and he was excited about pursuing a military career after he finished school.
Neighbors noted that there is only one way in and out of that part of the Montclaire neighborhood.
