Severe storms possible as strong cold front approaches Friday

and last updated

A warm front will lift north of our area Friday morning, allowing significantly warmer air in its wake.  Clouds breaking for sunshine and gusty southwesterly winds will push afternoon highs into the low and mid 80s.  Some upper 80s will be possible across southeastern Virginia.  A shower or two is possible early as the warm front moves through.

A strong cold front will approach from the west during the afternoon.  One line of storms should develop by mid-afternoon and track across the metro.  A second line will develop as the cold front swings through during the evening.  Some of these storms could be severe with damaging winds and large hail.  Even if there is no severe weather, locally heavy rainfall will occur with the showers and storms.

The front will clear southeastern Virginia by around midnight, followed by mostly clear weather for the weekend.
