LYONS, Ill — Authorities in Cook County recovered approximately 2,100 pounds of marijuana hidden in a shipment of frozen avocados last week. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be $10 million. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced workers at a facility in Lyons notified authorities of a suspicious shipment which had instructions for an “urgent pick-up.”
A K9 officer was called to the scene and detected drugs in the shipment.
“Investigators searched 1,512 boxes and each box contained several packages of frozen avocado pulp. Flat bricks of marijuana were found, covered in avocado pulp in some packages, while other packages did not contain any drugs,” Dart said in a statement.
The investigation continues.
