Colo. boy receives final goodbye from father two years after his death

Posted

LITTLETON, Colo. — After losing a loved one, many people look for messages or signs from those they lost. Recently, a Colorado boy received a message from his father nearly two years after his death.

Joseph Van Stone wanted to provide the best life for his family. He joined the Navy and earned two master’s degrees from MIT. While in Boston, he would often write to his son, Rowan.

When he left school to drive back home to Colorado, Joseph decided to send post cards from each state he visited on the way.

Those postcards were sent in 2007.

“I vaguely remember him saying, ‘I sent five or six,’ and I only got three or four in the mail. But I never thought anything of it,” Julie Van Stone, Joseph’s wife, told KUSA.

Two years ago, Joseph passed away from a rare brain disease. Rowan never had a chance to say goodbye.

Just before the two-year anniversary of his death, Rowan received a post card.

“Hello from Pennsylvania. I love you, and I miss you so much. See you soon, love daddy,” the postcard read.

While they don’t know how the card finally found its way home after eight years, Julie says she has an idea.

“I feel like that was the final goodbye that he didn’t get to say,” she said.
