Will Thursday winter storm cause schools to cancel classes?

RICHMOND, Va. -- Another round of winter weather has some parents frustrated with the thought of yet another snow day.

“I'm hoping it does nothing. We are just ready for some sunshine and ready for spring,” Raquiyah Waajid said.

Priscilla Wright was in prep mode Thursday afternoon, anxiously waiting to hear whether RPS will cancel or release students early.

“A lot of city kids walk to school,” Wright said. “If there is snow and they are walking home, and cars are flying, they're in just as much danger as kids on buses and a car coming up behind them.”

While snow is on the minds of many parents and schoolchildren, it is also on the minds of school leaders across the metro area. While leaders in Richmond have not made an announcement yet about Thursday, school board member Kimberly Gray said the district will always put safety first.

“Safety is always our first priority when we make decisions on closing or early dismissal. So I think we will be watching closely and making a decision as soon as possible,” Gray said.
