ETTRICK (WTVR) – Virginia State University will name Byron Thweatt as their new head football coach tomorrow morning. He succeeds Latrell Scott who left VSU to take the job at Norfolk State in December.
Thweatt has spent the past 8 years as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond, most recently coaching inside linebackers and serving as the program’s director of high school relations overseeing recruiting.
Thweatt was an all-state standout at Matoaca high, playing both running back and defensive end. He was an All-ACC linebacker at UVA, serving as team captain and holds the record for career starts by a linebacker. His career total of 387 tackles is third on UVA’s alltime list.
VSU is coming off their best season in school history, with 11 wins and making it to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. A formal announcement will be made on campus Thursday morning.
