After being bit by rat in pet store, Williamsburg woman concerned she may have rabies

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- A woman who says she was bitten by a rat in Williamsburg is worried she could have rabies. It happened while she was working at a Petsmart Wednesday morning.

Victoria Verbeck says the rat had been acting oddly lately in a display. She explained that it had been in quarantine because of neurological issues but, she'd handled it before and was trying to give it medicine.

“It turned around and just chomped down on my finger,” she said. “I was more like that really just happened.”

Veerbeck says a company nurse told her to wash the wound with soap. She claims she'll have to wait until Monday to get help from Petsmart because corporate offices are closed.

Veerbeck has decided to go ahead with rabies treatment.

Our Norfolk sister station, WTKR, reports that a Petsmart spokesperson says the company is taking the situation seriously and the health department is overseeing the testing.
